It’s been a while since I’ve put anything over 85% on the bar, and my body isn’t conditioned to heavier weights. Nonetheless, I’ve been wanting for a while to work up to a heavy single, and I figured I’d do it around my birthday because that gave me an excuse lol. It took a little pep talk to self when walking out 200 felt wildly heavy to convince myself that even though it’d been a long while, I could still squat two plates. “All you have to do is go down and come back up, simple as that.” And I did. And it felt slow, but great. I could leave it at that, but I’m always about being real. And the reality of the situation is that it only left me hungry for more. So, I did another single...or I tried to do another single, I should say. This time I went down and got stuck on the way up. I didn’t make it, but I did fight for it. | COACHING CUE | . “Swing, pull, punch” - picked up from @cspealler @iconathlete . When? Kettlebell snatches . What does this mean? Thinking of snatches as a swing is really helpful. . SWING Start off with that swing, just to their waist, having their hand go from palm inside to neutral. . PULL (At the top of the swing) my shoulder is going to come back and that is going to keep things close to my body. . PUNCH “So we swing, pull, punch that’s what is going to allow the kettlebell to rotate on top of the hand and the wrist smoothly. . I’ve had a few requests to do a post on how to train glutes without training quads.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I know there are some of you out there who are natural quadzillas and want to really focus in on the glutes.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This post is for you!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ You’ll want to focus on Romanian deadlifts and hip hinges to hit your backside without hitting your front side. Your personal #health is not just about you. I feel #motivated to share a little bit of this chapter of my life, because maybe others can relate as well. So earlier this year I suffered a minor back injury which knocked me off of my #workout game for awhile. I am finally beginning to get back into it! Tuesday Tip of the Week: Your Weight Shouldn’t be “In Your Heels” When You Squat Raise your hand if you’ve heard this one before: “Keep your weight in your heels while squatting” This is one of those universal cues that somehow got into the mainstream fitness space with no good reason. When we squat, we want to think about PUSHING the earth away from us. You can’t do that effectively if half of your foot is off the ground. Additionally, I’ve found that this cue, along with the “your knee can’t go past your toes” nonsense, leads athletes towards a hip dominant squat with very little knee flexion, a horizontal torso, and more pressure on the lower back. @draaronhorschig at @squat_university enforces the “tripod foot” as your first checklist item for a good squat. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✅Screw your big toe, pinky toe, and heel into the floor. ✅Keep the weight evenly distributed between those 3 places. ✅Don’t lose the tripod at any portion during the squat. Check out this graphic for a better visual. “Keep your weight in your heels” can be an effective correction cue for those who initiate their squat with the knees and shift their weight too far forward. You hear people say "sumo is cheating" "conventional is the only way." ... come on man, where's the truth? ⁣ When it comes to these two different styles of pulling, different set ups will maximally activate different muscles. However, when it comes to the main differences in muscle activity, according to EMG studies, there are mainly just two. In a nutshell: ⁣ Sumo deadlifts will put a greater emphasis on the quads (when pulling the bar off the floor), compared to a Conventional Style DL. ⁣ Conventional deadlifts will put a greater emphasis on the erector spinae (when pulling the bar off the floor), compared to a Sumo Style DL. ⁣ ⁣ Hamstrings/glutes activity results to be about the same. ⁣ ⁣ Personally I think they both are amazing exercises, and that both should be trained. Also, none of them is "easier" than the other, since anatomical differences & differences in muscle strength would play a big part in choosing what style might fit best/feel better.
