Pictured above: #kellyclarkson giving one of the most moving performances I’ve ever seen on American Idol: “Piece By Piece” ✨
I was talking to a student the other day about WHY we sing.
You might not think it’s important but it’s everything. It completely changes the way we sing.
Singers who sing to impress: They throw in extra runs and high notes and sing loud. They are not heartfelt or related to their audiences and the moment.
Singers who sing to inspire: They are the ones you trust. You know they’ve “been there” too. Their voice is a best friend that gets you through your childhood, your breakups and pandemics.
What kind of singer do you want to be?
You need very little skill as a singer to inspire people, actually
If you saw an elderly person at a nursing home with a croaking voice singing “We Are the World” right now
You’d cry into your bowl of soup
And you’d believe in hope again
You’d share that shit and it would go viral
While it’s always lovely to sound good, it’s the spirit with which you sing, that really helps you stand out.
Plenty of technically great singers never gain any traction because they are in their head and they are... sorry... boring.
I want you to free yourself from the need to impress.
Let singing be about love and service and fun. You will forget about your troubles. And you will shine.
And yes, you will begin to sound better ‘cause your throat won’t be grippin and your mind won’t be trippin. You can discover a new vocal technique from THIS foundation of spiritual freedom.
Now I want to hear from you- who are the singers that help you get through life?
My first inspirational singers were #sarahmclachlan and #anidifranco💜💜
