Black Lives Matter.
Racism is everywhere, every day. The problem is deep rooted, complex and systematic. As a white person of privilege (and by that I definitely don’t mean from a position of wealth) I can never understand, or ever truly fully know or even begin to imagine. I do not know how it feels to be oppressed by a corrupt global institutionalised system set up against me, experience racial persecution, prejudice or profiling, or to literally fear for my life because of the colour of my skin. I take so much for granted in this world, despite however aware I think I am.
But I can read, listen, learn, educate myself, and try to understand.
I can stand up in solidarity and speak out for what’s right, for justice. Try to be part of a solution.
Racism is a historically insidious disease kept in place by money and power, that won’t change through a trending post. Doesn’t stop when the dust settles. The work will never be over until hashtags like these don’t exist anymore. It’s about the violation of basic human/civil rights on every level.
I understand socially constructed ‘whiteness’ that skin colour equals privilege, but my own acknowledgement of that isn’t enough or the importance here.
We must all stand up for what is wrong and hold people directly accountable. Every day racism - Call that shit out!
So do what you can, talk to your family & friends, educate yourself, have those uncomfortable conversations, donate money, use your platform. Realise we can affect meaningful real change if we do it together, actively taking long-term action, but every voice needs to be heard.
Talking to the people who look like me. It has long been time to play our part to change this evil hatred. Please don’t be silent and don’t be ignorant, otherwise it’s compliance. Doing nothing always supports something. Your heart knows this is your fight too, and requires courage, involvement, willingness and conviction. It needs to be said.
Be an ally to the cause. Stand alongside with all those who fight against racism.
It is not enough to be quietly non-racist.
Now is the time to be actively anti-racist.
You’re with it. Or you’re not.
Silence is betrayal.
