Bouncing Souls – Johnny X ~ BYO/Chunksaah Records – 1995 ~ 1st press on black /?
Full disclosure, I borrowed this off my friend Adam Puddington back in the late 90s, and never managed to return it. While I feel it’s in a better home, I guess the right thing to do would be to give this back if he ever asks…but he’s not a social media guy, so he probably won’t remember (shhh!).
When my high school band did our first bit of touring in 1996, we met some good people in Philly that really introduced us to Bouncing Souls. I was only mildly familiar with the name, but they turned me onto the band. They also said that I kinda looked like the singer, but I’m not sure I see the resemblance. Anyway, this EP is a pretty good snippet of what I would call Stage 1 of the Bouncing Souls (pre-Epitaph era). At that point, the band was generally a bit faster, a bit more manic (in a good way), and a bit goofier in their lyrical content much of the time. These songs are definitely all great, but they have a different flavour than the anthems the band would go on to write for later releases- probably the material that more accurately defines their sound overall. That said, you’re likely to hear at least one of these tracks any time you’re lucky enough to find yourself at a Souls show… which come to think of it, I have not been to in longer than I care to admit…15 years at least- aka far too long. Gonna have to change that up next time they are in the area.
Anyone know how many were pressed? I’m guessing at least a gazillion.
