The books of first second and third John as well as the book of Jude are general epistles it says, although it doesn't specify the word general in 1 John but it does in 1 and 2nd Peter and James but the titling of the books may be wrong the titles aren't technically scripture, it should say the epistle of James and 1st and 2nd Peter are epistles to the Hebrews just like Hebrews says, it would read for instance "James the epistle to the Hebrews", because the first verse in James confirms this. But in 1st-3rd John and Jude there's doctrine that's available in these books that is helpful to both our doctrine for today, and the same with James and Peter and Hebrews as well but those are clearly when you read it, specific future Jewish doctrine with a distinctly different way of salvation described, but 1 John and Jude have as well things that match and will be helpful for future doctrine, but also are super helpful for today in so many ways and Christians can use them when trying to help a person understand salvation for today as well as the future, but different verses, you can clearly see this is true when you read both 1-3 John and Jude. They are very helpful in so many ways, including instruction in holiness but there's verses that enhance our understanding of salvation. Confessing our sins doesn't save us but there is the element of biblical truth where a person won't come to the saviour and the gospel of what he did for them until they admit they are a sinner and they need Jesus.
1 John 1:8-10
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
