Who knew that George Washington had no teeth!!? You can actually see his dentures at a museum in Mt. Vernon in the DC/VA area. 🤭🤗🦷🦷👀 (swipe right for slower speed). .
Edit: I just learned from a friend that the human teeth used in his dentures were possibly from slaves. I will do a follow up video on this soon. Stay tuned. .
My co worker told me that there is a myth about George Washington having wooden teeth. I was like “what?!” So I looked it up as I was curious how that myth started. By the time Washington was inaugurated as the first U.S. president, he had lost all of his teeth, but one. He did not want to be a one toothed U.S. president. So, he knew it needed to be fixed. His dentist made him dentures. The dentures were made out of iron, wires, and each tooth implant was made out of a mixture of hippopotamus ivory, possibly elephant and walrus ivory too. Also, it was suspected that the dentures had other humans’ and horses’ teeth as well. All of them were put together for the dentures. Washington loved to drink dark wine and he drank it often. However he rarely brushed his teeth nor flossed. So, the amount of wine that he drank stained his teeth and causing the teeth to have stained lines. The stained lines caused people to think that he had wooden teeth! That’s how the myth started!
