Reviewing an underground hip hop classic today, MF Doom and Madlib’s collab album Madvillainy. Together the two form the hip hop superduo Madvillain. Madlib’s production is phenomenal as always but even more so on this album. You rarely hear albums like this in 2020. Whether it be the accordion on “Accordion”, unique samples, or classic drum beats Madlib is on top of his game here. MF Doom raps his ass off with tons of punchlines and off kilter flows that sound great. His lowkey rapping delivery is super refreshing and he matches with the Madlib production extremely well. This album was a risk and so forward thinking but still remains close to the traditional hip hop roots. Doom flows effortless over Madlib boom bap on “Curls”, “Figaro”, and “All Caps”. He adopts a slower singing voice on “Rainbows” which is one of the songs off the album I’m still not sure how I feel about. MF Doom is one hundred percent the predecessor of Earl Sweatshirt and I think the closest thing we see to Doom’s work in 2020 is Earl’s decent output. Although, they are each different in their own way.
