But it’s social media and they have 5k + followers...it must mean it’s - (insert) reputable/ trustworthy/ appropriate/ truth/good for me. I spend a lot of time in treatment discussing with patients just this. The online program they bought that doesn’t offer scalability. .
We often get asked to put more content on IG about what exercises people should be doing, what stretches are the best- the truth of that matter is- how do we know what’s good or bad for you? How do we know if you need hip flexor stretches or better core activation when you feel like your hip flexors are always tight - until we see you. Maybe it’s an excuse I am using to not generate content, or maybe I just can’t put something out there that might be someone’s antidote and another persons poison. When I go in to teach a movement class I have an idea of what I want to teach. The reality is that when I see people move the plan I had often goes out the window and everyone ends up doing something slightly different. That’s the benefit to being seen in person, small classes and or one on one. If you’re going to coach- then coach. .
Just because there is social proof of what you “should be” doing or following what’s popular at the moment on social media, it does not always mean it’s appropriate. Just the other day listening to a pod cast by someone really reputable they stated women should intermittent fast- how disappointing they were not up on current female research. Learn to discern what’s best for you and be ok with having an opinion on it - separate yourself from social pressure if it doesn’t feel right to you and learn how to run your own race in the process. .
Side bar: It took me a year to get a kipping pull up- after laying the foundation of iso holds, beat swings, and strict pull-ups. It would have been ignorant of me to think I could do it right away or to skip the necessary accessory work. They still need A LOT of work but I’m willing to do all the boring essential stuff to not cause damage to my shoulders. It’s hard to navigate through it all- that’s why you have people like me😉. Knowledge- it’s one of our core values🤓
