#FOOLSGOLD by #THESTONEROSES turns 30 today! (November 13th 1989)
Released as a double A-side with ‘What the World Is Waiting For’ in autumn 1989, the rock-funk epic FOOLS GOLD would earn the band their first Top 10 single and become their biggest commercial hit at the time.
So great was public demand following its release as a promo copy B-side that it was flipped to the A-side for the single's second pressing and went on to become 1989’s biggest selling independent single.
Built around a loop from James Brown's "Funky Drummer,” the song was essentially about opportunism and man’s betrayal of man. "The song 'Fools Gold' is about greed,” said Ian Brown in 1989. “ 'Ave you seen Treasure Of The Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart? Three geezers who are skint and they put their money together to get equipment to go looking for gold. Then they all betray each other. They all end up dead, don't they? That's what the song is about. It's dead right man.”
