For our Black History Month artist retrospective, meet @StepAfrika! founder C. Brian Williams. He and his company brought THE MIGRATION: REFLECTIONS ON JACOB LAWRENCE to New Victory in 2017 and will be returning next Friday, February 28, with DRUMFOLK. Below are his words on THE MIGRATION! “Every time I see my company, Step Afrika!, perform THE MIGRATION: REFLECTIONS ON JACOB LAWRENCE, I think of my grandmother and her never-fulfilled desire to go west from Texas to the perceived paradise of sunny California. I think of Jacob Lawrence and his family, escaping the Jim Crow South and its appalling restrictions on African-American freedom. I think of the hundreds of thousands of brave migrants who left Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and elsewhere during the Great Migration, making the first 'free' choice of their entire lives and transforming the United States of America through their movement.
THE MIGRATION is much more than a show for me. In truth, it is a percussive tribute to our ancestors who left one world behind with the hopes of creating a new one, brimming with promise and possibility. My hope is that we never look at a 'migrant' in the same way again for within each and every one of us is a migration story.” #history #americanhistory #africanamericanhistory #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #offbroadway #tya #theatreforyoungaudiences #nyctheatre #nyctheater #stepping #stepafrika #jacoblawrence
