A dope post from @stacyepps about album equivalent sales. These numbers have been placed because of the rapid change of streaming over the years. Keeping this in mind is important to remember whenever you see an artist go platinum (1,000,000 sales) or gold (500,000 sales).
I remember when Drake's Scorpion went platinum the day it came on in 2018. While that does sound impressive, these are actual numbers:
At the time of Scorpion's release:
God's Plan was 7x platinum (which is equal to 700,000 album sales)
Nice for What was 3x platinum(which is equal to 300,000 album sales)
With these two leading singles, the album was certified platinum with 1,000,000 albums [equivalent] sales. Always pay attention to the numbers. Often times, a report of how the album did will list "pure album sales" stating how much an album was actually bought.
Scorpion ended up selling 732,000 album-equivalent units, with 160,000, which is still amazing.
