📚 BEST OF 2019 📚
It's rare for me to walk out of any bookshop without at least one picture book tucked under my arm, but in the first 30 seconds at @petitedrawnandquarterly in Montreal last summer, I knew I was in big trouble. Julia Woignier’s Camping Sauvage was the first book I spotted, and it held its place at the top of a stack that grew taller and taller.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This book is also something of a “tell” for the illustration style I gravitate towards. When I was a kid, I learned to draw with my mom’s Chartpak Ad Markers. They became the tools which defined my earliest picture-making—inky, saturated and bold; minimal planes of color used to maximum effect. It also meant I was working with a pretty sophisticated palette for a six year old. Your average Crayola box doesn't come with colors like Cadmium Orange and Basic Grey #5! So it's no wonder that, as much as the story itself, this one brings me right back to childhood. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
