Backxwash- God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It
Released May 28, 2020
Industrial Hip Hop, Experimental Hip Hop, Noise Rap
Before her fresh new fame via The Needle Drop, Backxwash has been impressing me a lot on Bandcamp for a while now. Its wonderful to hear an artist plunge into these hard-core noise rap sounds and still sound uniquely herself. This may not have been her intention, but a lot of these songs evoke a sense of voodoo and dark magic and spookiness that i find super intriguing. I can't talk too much without mentioning one of the greatest songs of 2020, Black Magic. There is something extremely surreal about these lyrics and the eerie sample hanging in the background. It's one of the catchiest and ear grabbing songs on the record as well as one of the most chilling. Backxwash's vocals are often harrowing and dark but also quite expressive and emotional. I also have to mention the intoxicatingly dark Into The Void which sees her exploring these themes of death and depression. The wild and sporadic Spells is another fantastically spooky track featuring one half of Black Dresses. And i think i might need therapy from the song Amen because it did a number on me hahaha. The biggest criticism i can give this record is that i just want more. It kind of runs like a mixtape especially with the short tracks and short run time. Despite the scant track list, Backxwash comes through with her defining record of dark experimental and emotionally intense hip hop. She is a true personality that I can't wait for the future of.
