I always knew I was an artist in a broad sense and even though I knew I wasn’t Van Gogh I knew it didn’t matter because I enjoyed being in the flow with the brush. I enjoyed getting messy with the paint on my hands and zoning right into the art. It was my own form of mediation. I didn’t think about anything else but the painting. Hours would go by without me even noticing. I find my art changes as I move through life. What once was bright and vibrant in some of my hard times has now become more light and subdued, a little more abstract. It changes, as do I, throughout life’s many moments .
Writing wasn’t always my thing, however, it was just that I had to find something where I didn’t have to follow all the rules. I found that through poetry. I found something that resonated deeply with my own voice. It’s helped me blend the darkness with the light. The healing for me is in seeing some of the dark parts of life as incredibly beautiful. It’s where we learn our resilience in life, it’s how we learn that we can always find the light .
Creativity means freedom to me, freedom of expression, freedom of choice and freedom to live from truth. The thing about our natural gifts, is they just are. We don’t have to make ourselves be them, or force them, they come to us in time, they’ve always been there all along, if we look back on some of our younger moments, how we liked to play, what brought us joy, you’ll likely see it there. It was there all along. Our gifts come forward when we make space for them to flow. And that’s just it, they flow. They don’t feel hard, or agonizing, they just are .
What are some of the things that put you in your deepest state of flow? .
